Abstract |
Extraarticular ligament reconstruction by a portion of the flexor carpi radialis (Eaton-Littler Procedure) to stabilize the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint has been used for the treatment of arthritis of thumb CMC joint. Authors performed this procedure for three cases of arthritis of thumb CMC joint. Thoese cases were regarded as stage two and stage three according to Eatons radiologic stage. One case was post-traumatic arthritis and the others(both hands of a patient) were rheumatoid arthritis. Follow up periods were twelve months, twenty months, and four yeras each. Clinical analysis was performed on the basis of pain, range of motion, pinch power, radiologic study and instability on stress X-ray view. The pain was nearly abolished in all cases. The pinch power was 88%, 94% and 89% of those of average performance of normal persons with use of calibrated dynamometer. The range of motion of thumb CMC joint was similar to normal side. The Eaton-Littler procedure for thumb joint arthritis experienced by authors was reliable even in the presence of advanced arthritic changes. |
