Abstract |
Purpose : To report the clinical results of the interposition arthroplasty using flexor carpi radialis for carpometacarpal osteoarthritis of the thumb. Methods : This operation was performed in eight hands. The indication for the operation was severely disabling pain after the failure of conservative treatment. Total trapeziectomy was performed in four cases, and partial trapeziectomy was performed in four cases. Clinical assessments included evaluation of pain, pinch and grip strength, and range of motion of the thumb. Results : According to Eaton & Littler's classification, the clinical results were graded as excellent in two hands, good in five hands and poor in one hand. The grip and pinch power after partial trapeziectomy averaged 87.8%, 86.8%, grip and pinch power after total trapeziectomy averaged 83.0%, 79.5%. The mean maximum abduction of the thumb was 20.5o in patients with partial trapeziectomy, and 18.3o in patients with total trapeziectomy. The pain score was improved in all cases after operation Conclusion : Flexor carpi radialis tendon interposition arthroplasty is considered as an effective method for the treatment of the carpometacarpal osteoarthritis of the thumb, and better result was observed after partial trapeziectomy over total trapeziectomy. |
