Abstract
Purpose
This study is to evaluate outcomes of operative treatment in collateral ligament injuries with or without the avulsion fracture of metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of thumb. Materials and Methods: Twenty thumbs that operated on collateral ligament injury and followed up over one year were included in this study. Ten of 20 thumbs were accompanied the collateral ligament injury with avulsion fracture and others were only injured the collateral ligament. Clinical results were subjectively evaluated about pain, instability, pinch power and range of motion of thumb MCP joint. And functional results were objectively evaluated about range of motion and pinch power. Results: In clinical results, 17 of 20 thumbs were evaluated over ‘Good’, and there was no significant difference between avulsion fracture group and collateral ligament injury group (p=0.313). Of four parameters, however, the range of motion showed better result in the one than the other (p=0.025). In functional results, the range of motion was measured 70% against the contralateral thumb and the pinch power was 66%. The range of motion showed better result in avulsion fracture group (p=0.022), but the pinch power was no significant difference between two groups (p=0.127). Conclusion: Pain, stability of MCP joint, and pinch power were no significant difference between avulsion fracture group and collateral ligament injury group. The range of motion, however, showed significant difference.
