Abstract |
Introduction: The standard treatment of enchondroma is by curettage of the lesion and filling of the resultant cavity with cancellous bone graft. Recently, good results have been reported with simple curettage without using bone graft or bone substitute. This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic curettage without bone grafting on the treatment of enchondroma of the hand Materials and Methods: Thirteen patients (13 bones) with enchondroma of the hand were treated with endoscopic curettage without bone grafting. A 2 or 3mm skin incision was made at the level of the lesion, and the cortex of the bone was fenestrated using a Steinmann pin for portal of instruments. Thorough curettage of the tumor was performed under endoscopic visualization, using small curettes and mini-shaver system. Results: New bone formation and remodelling of the lesion were observed in all patients. One patient had a fracture after surgery, which was healed with a cast immobilization. Other complications such as infection, recurrences were not observed. Functional recovery was rapid and patient's satisfaction was high owing to minimal scar. Conclusion: We conclude that endoscopic curettage without bone grafting is an effective method in treatment of enchondroma in the hand. |
