Abstract
Purpose
To evaluate clinical outcomes and efficacy of minimal-incision open carpal tunnel release (CTR) and anatomical safety. Materials and Methods: 145 patients (204 hands) underwent minimal-incision CTR with less than 1-1.5cm oblique incision. Outcomes were assessed by using Michigan Hand Outcome Questionnaire (MHQ) scores, relief of symptoms, scar hypersensitivity, tenderness, grip strength and key pinch. We also performed a case of cadaveric dissection to evaluate anatomical safety. Results: All patients reported complete resolution of their symptoms and some patients presented with residual symptoms, scar tenderness (166 hands, 81.4%) were improved gradually. No scar hypersensitivity was observed. No statistically significant difference in either grip strength or key pinch was observed. MHQ scores improved significantly between preoperative and postoperative periods. Anatomical safety was established by a cadaveric study. Conclusions: Minimal-incision CTR provides an effective, reliable and safe procedure. This methods combines the advantages of endoscopic CTR (reduced pain and quicker recovery) and conventional open CTR(good exposure and lower operative expense).
