Abstract |
Purpose : To analyse retrospectively that five patients treated in extensor pollicis longus tendon rupture after Colles' fracture. Materials and Methods : From January 1990 to December 1998, five patients (one male and four female) whose average age was 56 years were treated by free tendon graft in extensor pollicis longus tendon rupture after Colles' fracture. We analysed about the fracture pattern, mechanism of rupture, time of rupture, postoperative thumb function. Results : The interval between the fracture and the tendon rupture is average 12.3 weeks. The mechanisms of rupture are mechanical attrition(4 cases) and vascular interference(1 case). At final follow-up, extensor lag is average 5O at the interphalangeal joint of the thumb. Four patients have been able to return to their previous occupation following operative repair of the tendon, with very little subjective handicap. Conclusion : Late spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon following Colles' fracture is a rare complication, but sometimes it happens about 1 month after fracture. The rupture is, in all probability, due to mechanical attrition or aseptic necrosis of the tendon. Free palmaris longus grafts yield good results after EPL rupture. |
