Abstract
The carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome that characterized by pain, especially in night. If symptoms persist in spite of conservative treatment, or is severe, usually the release of transverse carpal ligament is needed. It is reported that the surgical release of the transverse carpal ligament without neurolysis is sufficient and produces good result. The authors analyzed 34 symptomatic hands of 22 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, operated with 2 methods, endoscopic carpal tunnel release by dual portal technique, percutaneous carpal tunnel release with Kim's instrument during the period from June 1994 to December 1997 at department of orthopaedic surgery, Seoul Adventist Hospital. The majority of patients were improved and complications were minimal after surgical decompression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. The purpose of our study is to compare the clinical results of endoscopic carpal tunnel release with those of percutaneous release with Kim's instrument.
