Abstract |
Twenty non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients with trigger finger were retrospectively reviewed with respect to response to treatment. All patients were initially treated by one to three injections of methylprednisolone mixed with local anesthetics. All patients had less than six months' duration of symptoms. Average follow-up was sixteen months(minimum five months). When compared to reported studies of trigger finger in the general population, diabetic patients had a higher incidence of multiple digits involvement(30%), ring finger involvement(41%) and other disease association(35%). And diabetic patients, especially who had multiple digit involvement, responded less favorably to treatment by steroid injection. But sixty-five percent of the patients were cured or improved and there were no complications related to steroid injections. We concluded that intrasynovial steroid injection is the appropriate initial treatment for trigger fingers in non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients. |
