Abstract
Purpose
To investigate clinical results of Open reduction and internal fixation with K-wire and modified extension-block K-wire fixation in treatment of Mallet fracture. Materials and Methods: From March 2000 to December 2006, thiry-one patients(group A) treated by ORIF with K-wire fixation and twenty-four patients (group B) treated by modified extension-block K-wire fixation were included. Using Wehbe and Schneider’s classification 7 type I B, 24 type II B fractures were in group A and 4 type I B, 20 type II B were in group B. Between two groups postoperative range of motion of distal interphalangeal joint, bony union time, operative time were compared by Chi-square test and functional results were graded by Crawford’s criteria. Results: There were no statistical difference in postoperative clinical data and results according to Crawford’s criteria except operative time. In group A, 2 temporary skin problems and 5 tenderness on skin incision were noticed and more operative time was taken. Conclusion: According to clinical results except possibilities of complications and differences in operation time, two operative techniques are considered as good treatments in Mallet fracture.
